Peurakaira area is included in the negotiations between FANC Finnish Association for Nature Conservation and Metsähallitus concerning the additional protection of old-growth forests in northern Finland.

So far (autumn 2004) no concrete results have been reached. As a starting point Metsähallitus suggested that the Häntävasanpalo and Korkiatievanmaa areas in the middle of Peurakaira should be excluded form the talks. However, in these areas grow old-growth forests with hundreds of years old pine trees and plenty of decaying wood. The areas are rich of tree hanging lichen, being extremely good reindeer grazing areas.
